University of Malaya (UM) Campus Activities

UM CAMPUS ACTIVITIES

Introduction

University is not only a place for studying, it is a place where we can discover and develop ourselves through what are we passionate in.

There are a few reasons why all students should be active in extra-curricular activities especially during the beginning stage of university life.

i. Merit

In University of Malaya, the place of residential college is limited. Even though merit is not the main consideration in securing a college spot for next session, it is still a factor that cannot be underestimated.

ii. Personal development

Extra-curricular activity is a platform to develop the soft-skills as well as build connection with people from all walks of life. These factors are significant to brush up the CV. Outstanding CV is an advantage in the beginning level of the career in our future.

iii. Hobby

University timetable is not as pack as matriculation and Form 6. We need to manage the time wisely to do what we are passionate. For example, we can learn some skills like playing sports, musical instruments, debate and so on.

In University of Malaya, the extracurricular activities have been mainly classified into three categories.

i. College
ii. Faculty
iii.University

College

Residential college is not only a place to stay, it is a big family. For your information, all undergraduate (bachelor) first year students are eligible to stay in residential college. It is optional to stay inside or outside UM campus.

Generally, there are 12 residential colleges in University of Malaya. All students from different courses will mingle with each other in residential college, except KK6 which is reserved for students from Faculty of Medicine as well as KK11 which is reserved for students from PASUM (University of Malaya Centre for Foundation Studies in Science).

After MINGGU HALUANSISWA UNIVERSITI MALAYA (MHS), there will be another interaction week for respective residential college. This will be the time where we can register for the college activities and competition.

To stay in residential college for second year, the students need to be active in residential college activities. There are a few categories of activities in college.

i. Administration
ii. Sports
iii. Arts
iv. Projects
v. Clubs

Administration

JAWATANKUASA TINDAKAN KOLEJ (JTK) is considered as the student representative of respective residential college.

Under JTK, there will be JAWATANKUASA KERJA PERKEMBANGAN (JKP). Each JKP have different job scope and will oversee different projects under PENGERUSI JKP. First year students will mostly involve as an executive member for JKP.

- JKP SUKAN DAN REKREASI
- JKP KESENIAN DAN KREATIVITI
- JKP AKADEMIK DAN INTELEKTUAL
- JKP KEBAJIKAN DAN KEMASYARAKATAN
- JKP KEROHANIAN DAN PERPADUAN

For some residential colleges, first year students can become floor representative. (KETUA ARAS)

Besides, the residents can also apply to become PEMUDAHCARA MAHASISWA (PM) during the second half semester. The main function of PM is to guide the freshies during the entire orientation week.

-PM KOLEJ is chosen from JIK to handle the freshies of respective residential college.
-PM SENTRAL is chosen from HEPA to handle the freshies in DEWAN TUNKU CANSELOR (DTC).

The benefits of involving in administration is you will know more about the college system as compared to others.

Sports

In the first half semester, there will be a mega sports festival that will be organised in UM. It is well-known as SUKAN MAHASISWA UNIVERSITI MALAYA (SUKMUM). This is an opportunity for students to represent respective residential college to compete with other residential colleges.

For every sport, a manager (from students) will be appointed to select and handle the athletes. The selection and training is normally done at night and in the weekend.

In 2017/18, this is the first time UM organising MINI-SUKMUM to encourage more non-sports-inclining students to involve in sports.

Arts

In the second half semester, there will be two big arts festival that will be carried out in UM, which are well-known as KARNIVAL TEATER UNIVERSITI MALAYA (KARVITER) and FESTIVAL SENI UNIVERITI MALAYA (FESENI). It is an opportunity for the students to show their talent on the stage. Same with SUKMUM, there will be a manager appointed from students to select and handle the performers.

Besides training at night and in the weekend, there will also have ‘perkampungan’ as the preparation for the competition during the semester break in first semester. (the duration depends on every residential college).

Normally, KARVITER will be held first then straight away followed by FESENI.

Before the competition, there will also have a preview day for all performers in every residential college. Undeniably, arts competition need high level of commitment. As usual, the competition will be held at Auditorium KPS and Dewan Tunku Canselor (DTC).

Projects and Clubs

There will be a lot of projects and clubs under JTK and each JKP, we can choose to be either participants or organising committees in every project.

The type and quantity of projects differ according to every college. The impact can also be different based on the level of activities. (college, university, state, national, international)

There will be a lot of positions and departments for every project. These are a few of it.

- MAJLIS TERTINGGI (PENGARAH, TIMBALAN PENGARAH, SETIAUSAHA, BENDAHARI, KETUA BIRO)
- PROGRAM DAN PROTOKOL
- DANA DAN TAJAAN
- LOGISTIK DAN HARTA BENDA
- PUBLISITI DAN PERHUBUNGAN AWAM
- MULTIMEDIA DAN TEKNIKAL
- TUGAS-TUGAS KHAS

If you are interested to join any project and club, interview or assessment is needed.

College dinner is a compulsory project for all residential college. It is the day to appreciate the residents who have contributed to the college along the two semesters.

As compared to projects, the clubs might not have a specific event day. However, the club is running for the whole two semesters.  (e.g. KELAB DOKUMENTASI, UMCARES, KELAB MENARI) There are also a few projects that are under the club.

Faculty

Faculty is not only a place of studying, it is also a place where you can brush up your soft skill. Faculty event is the platform for the students to interact with the course mates and seniors. The objective of faculty event is more tending to prepare yourself for future.

For your information, not all faculty in UM have their own club and even their own event. Sometimes, we might need to participate in the events that are organised by other organisations. (institution, company, NGO)

These will be a few types of faculty event. (for active clubs) We can choose to become either organising committees or participants of it.

- Interaction Week
- Conference/ Convention/ Congress/ Seminar/ Forum/ Summit
- Competition/ Challenge
- Run/ Race/ Sports
- Festival/ Fair/ Carnival/ Fiesta/ Exhibition
- Trip
- Gala Dinner

University

University event is another big platform for all of us to interact with people outside of our own college and faculty. For this category, it is too wide to be explained.

i. Uniform Body

There are 2 uniform bodies in UM, which are PASUKAN LATIHAN PEGAWAI SIMPANAN (PALAPES) and KOR SUKARELAWAN SISWA SISWI (SUKSIS). One of the benefits of being active in uniform bodies are we can be confirmed to stay in the college until graduation. (PALAPES for KK5 and SUKSIS for KK12 from second year onwards).

Nevertheless, PALAPES and SUKSIS need high level of commitment as it takes a few years to get the ‘watikah’.

PALAPES has been classified into army (land) and navy (sea).

Even though you might not from these two uniform bodies, HEPA will also organise a lot of other camps for the students. (e.g. KURSUS ASAS SUKARELAWAN, PROGRAM JATI DIRI MAHASISWA TAHUN PERTAMA, KEMBARA INSPIRASI) We can just enjoy while learning through these 3 days 2 nights camps without requiring long-term commitment.

ii. Volunteering

For volunteering projects, SEKRETARIAT SUKARELAWAN UNIVERSITI MALAYA (SEKRUM) will be the main organisation. There will be a variety of short-term and long-term projects that we can participate to create an impact to the community. Follow their Facebook page to gain the first-handed information.

Besides SEKRUM, there is also a lot of other bodies that provide a platform for students to inculcate volunteerism.

iii. Event

Besides, the students can also become event crew/ organising committee/ secretariat for some mega annual events in University of Malaya. (e.g. FESKUM, PTUM, FESENI...)

iv. Sports

Off-campus students can represent UNIT LUAR KAMPUS (ULK) to participate in SUKMUM, KARVITER and FESENI. Besides, off-campus students can also represent residential college in the competition voluntarily if invited.

Moreover, MAJLIS SUKAN UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA (MASUM) and SUKAN INSTITUSI PENDIDIKAN TINGGI (SUKIPT) will be a great platform for those who are talented in sports to fight for UM glory.

Not all people are sporty, but it is not an excuse for us for not involving in sports. There are a lot of runs and walks in UM for us to participate.

v. Campus politics

Every year, the students can choose the students representative from their own faculty and zone. The selected representative from different parties will form the MAJLIS PERWAKILAN PELAJAR (MPP). Students representatives play important role to fight for the right and welfare of the students.

Under MPP, there is SEKRETARIAT MPP which is open for application after the campus election.

vi. Clubs and Societies

There are a lot of registered clubs in University of Malaya. Under every club, there will have a variety of events. Choose them wisely based on personal interest and time constraint. (e.g. AIESEC UM, PERSATUAN BAHASA CINA UM, PERSATUAN MAHASISWA NEGERI UM......).

The club will start their publicity even before MHS through social media. They will officially start the member recruitment after MHS. For your information, some clubs will do their promotion and member recruitment by opening booth outside of PERDANASISWA COMPLEX (KPS) during FESTIVAL KONVOKESYEN UNIVERSITI MALAYA. (FESKUM) Like as much Facebook page as possible to gain more first-handed information.

Some clubs do allow us to learn event management skill, some allow us to perform on the stage, some even allow us to participate in the competition of various levels.

Conclusion

University life should be full of inks and colours. Do more research and exploration along these few years to discover inner-self. Participate every activity sincerely and try to give the highest commitment. Bear in mind to leave no regret in campus life. Have a blast and all the best!

Thank you.
